This painting intricately weaves the layers of the food chain with the wisdom of the Eastern proverb, “The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind.” In the upper left, a large koi covets a pigeon, echoing the endless cycle of hunter and prey. Below, another koi is about to consume a frog, symbolizing the perpetual rhythm of life, predation, and renewal.
The forms of fish, bird, and frog entwine amidst petal and water motifs, blending motion with stillness. The artwork visually narrates the unending hierarchy of nature: for every hunter, there is another waiting in the wings. It is a reminder of the ever-present chain of consequences, both in the animal world and in human affairs.
The interplay of flowing lines and petal-like shapes, combined with vibrant colors, adds a poetic beauty and latent tension. The piece invites viewers to contemplate the delicate balance of power, vulnerability, and fate that defines the floating world we inhabit.
